Dental Sedation Options

Does Visiting the Dentist Make You Anxious?

Many people feel fear when they think about going to the dentist and try to avoid it. However, going to the dentist is important for maintaining your overall health. At Alpharetta Comprehensive Dentistry, we offer a variety of sedation options to make your visit painless and worry-free.

Our team is highly trained in sedation dentistry and will monitor you for the entirety of your visit to ensure your safety.

Not Just for Anxiety

Beyond fear or anxiety, people choose sedation dentistry for many reasons, including:

  • Have sensitive teeth
  • Are unable to sit still in the dentist’s chair
  • Have a low pain threshold
  • Want dental work done in fewer visits
  • Require a large amount of dental work
  • Have a gag reflex that makes receiving dental care difficult

Types of Sedation

Our office is fully qualified to provide you with each of the three following sedation dentistry options. Depending on the procedure being performed and the anxiety level of the patient, the type of sedation used will vary. No matter the issue, we have a solution to make your visit easier.

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Our lowest level of sedation is perfect for people who want to relax during their procedure but still want to drive themselves home afterward.

This gas is administered through a mask, called a nasal hood, that is placed over your nose. You will breathe as usual and begin to feel the effects after about 20 seconds, but you will not lose consciousness. After the mask is removed and you’re no longer breathing the gas, the effects wear off quickly.

  • Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is taken in the form of a pill or liquid before the procedure. This medication will allow you to remain calm while your dental work is done. It will make you feel a little drowsy, but you will not fall asleep. This option is great for patients who feel anxious.

This sedative takes a while to wear off, so you’ll need someone else to drive you home.

  • IV Sedation

Intravenous, or IV, sedation is the strongest level of a sedative that we offer. The intensity of sights, smells, and other sensations will be lower during your procedure. IV sedation is administered through the vein where it enters your bloodstream and begins to work immediately. Our staff is able to control the level administered throughout the procedure to ensure you receive the proper dosage.

You may need medical clearance from your doctor or physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Cardiac disease
  • Respiratory disease

Because IV sedation is strong and takes a while to wear off, someone else will have to drive you home.

Relax During Your Procedure

For whichever reason you choose to have sedation dentistry, our highly trained team will make sure you feel comfortable. Dental procedures are important for your health and confidence, but that’s no reason for you to be uncomfortable. Let yourself relax while we brighten your smile.
